G Technology and Photographic Backup

I had this email from a friend at G-Tech, This was following the question of “Do I upgrade my 1TB G-Safe or do I go for something else”

Interesting thought train. Some price changes coming which may alter your
perspective a little! Budgets are always a tricky issue so I’ll assume less
£ is better!

So your library is 1.2TB and growing at around 25GB per week*. Will you keep
everything in the library indefinitely or is there a timeline beyond which
the images are no longer required? Can you envisage a library size which
will never be exceeded? (I think I know the answer).

Upgrading the disk on your older G-SAFE is a good idea and one that many
follow. 2TB is currently the largest HDD (3TB will come next but is still a
way off).
Assume 2 x 2TB drive modules is £340 today. You will need a 3rd drive
module to archive 4TB (whilst leaving 1 drive as a slave to mirror your
archived drive back to) so cost could be £510?  You could probably buy bare
2TB drives more cheaply in the open market but reliability and warranty may
be compromised.

Stand-alone, a 2TB G-SAFE is only going to back-up half of your G-RAID.
Your G-RAID will be half full in 7 months so G-SAFE strategy will only buy
you a relatively short term solution before needing to add more 2TB
modules.  I’d also be slightly concerned about bare HDD stored in a
cupboard for long periods. HDD need to be run up occasionally and at the
same time, physical handling should be kept to a minimum. How about a
different approach – Another G-RAID 4TB is about £440 (and will fall next
week). Mirror your two G-RAID’s and you are good for 2 years. During that
time, you can develop your back-up / archive strategy
further. Have you considered tape for archive solutions? Relatively low
cost cartridges and long shelf life (maybe 30 years?) they make sense
although good mechanisms  (LTO for example) are expensive.

So, there you have it… More questions to consider and decide upon.

Watch this space!

communication breakdown

Interesting really, the day after I decide to stop shooting music I get some feedback from a major band / asked for images and then I get emailed an offered a press pass to another large gig – but you know what, I’m just not there right now. I might be some day, but I’m not now.

I’ve shot boxing two days in the last seven and it doesn’t really do it for me either – the live action bit, but what did bring some sparkle was a couple of portraits I’ve shot during the last week – I’m still learning and experimenting, But I had a hell of a lot of fun shooting this stuff.

Today was a shoot with a young British Flyweight boxer named Ashley Sexton, Flash Ash if you will… Very basic set-up…

Will your Phone ever replace your Camera?

We all like snapping a photo with our camera while we’re out and about, and a lot of people cackle in with that age old adage “The best camera you can have is the one you have when you need a camera” Yeah, that’s all lovely and warm feeling but is it actually true?

Nathan Pask Phone Photographer

Mum, is that you?

With the introduction of higher resolution mobile telephone cameras, there has been some weak speculation that “one day you won’t need to carry a camera” and that the technology exists to combine your mobile phone and your camera to reduce the amount of technology that you need to carry around. If that happens, I will welcome it with open arms (and a closed camera bag, no less!)

Can you imagine not having to carry around your dSLR to photo shoots? You’re there mid-way through photographing Elle MacPherson and your mother calls, you simply lift your camera to your ear and tell her you’re having a nice day and that you’d like a roast for dinner and then carry on shooting the next SketchBook Mag cover. No, It doesn’t work like that.

Disco Stu Makes a Call on his Nikon dSLR

Hello, Mum?

Apple iPhone set the proverbial cat amongst the proverbial pigeons with the 3Gs, claiming it had a better camera than anything on the market – I can’t recall where I read that and it may indeed have been some hype straight from the dark hamsters website, but it certainly does do well and do you notice that it’s only got a 3-megapixel autofocus camera and not an 8mp camera that some of the phones available today have.

I’ve emailed a couple of telephone manufacturers and have asked to try out a couple of high end camera phones for a story a lot like this one, but on dPS. If you’re from HTC, Sony or Apple… Get in touch, right?…

Here’s something I prepared earlier – these come to you via the iNQ Chat – 3.2MP

Nothing else matters… Or does it?!

Part Two… [follows part one]

That amazing song by Metallica, and a line uttered frequently by lovers in corny films everywhere (?) but if you think that SEO is all that matters, and that you should focus all your efforts on just that and that “Nothing else Matters” (See what I did there) then you’re very mistaken dear watson…

Photos of Metallica at Sonisphere 2009 by Simon Pollock

I had a brief (umm?!) interview with the pretty darn awesome “Disco Stu” last night via Skype and one of the questions that he asked was “I look at your blog often and notice that you’re talking about SEO which is out of the ordinary for you, why?” Well, I’m talking about it because I’ve recently joined ThirdTribe, a resource on internet marketing / social media and everything in between.  As a result, I’ve become about a million percent more aware of good practices for all of the things surrounding how and why you can make it easier to have the internet, and in-turn “buyers” find your photos and stuff.. The reason I’m sharing it is because I want people to get better at this stuff and starting to do something with their photography.

Anyway… This blog post is a very VERY simple part two…

“If you don’t have decent content, it doesn’t matter how much SEO you waste your time doing”

What do I mean? Well, let’s just say that you google “Music Photographer” and that you, as a result, arrived here on my website… But that after 40 seconds you realised the content was utter crap… You’d never visit again, would you? That’s certainly how I roll…”Content is Key, but if people can’t find it… well, it’s pointless! so, chicken, egg…”

But you’re a music photographer, not a web guy?!

Yep, true… But these days unless you want to pay someone like me to run your Social Media (Damn I hate that phrase) for you, you’re going to have to learn all this yourself!

Here’s a list of cool photographers that have nailed it with “showing up”

www.grahamsmithphotography.com
www.michaelwilliams.co.uk
www.loudpixels.net
www.musicphotographer.co.uk

Check them out. Now, think about what you would like to read if you went to a blog and start to work on the content of your own website and make sure it’s good quality.

But, What is SEO for Photographers?

PART ONE…

After my last entry on “SEO as it applies to photographers” I was asked a million times* “Yeah, great, we’re all talking and engaging each other, but what the hell is SEO” ….Anyone want to guess? It’s nothing to do with the name of a cracking 80’s band, and it doesn’t stand for Shutter Emergency Option either!…

Search Engine Optimisation baby!

Yeah, OK, great… But what is it? Well, it’s the difference between having a post turn up in a major search engine and not. For example, if you google the phrase “SEO as it applies to photographers” there is every chance that my post will be near the top somewhere… but that’s not even really it, because who is going to Google that exact phrase? They’re going to search for something like “Photographer SEO” and they’re going to end up on a website that sells a book on just that for $39.00 – That’s a great idea, I could take a whole series of blog posts and write an eBook – but I digress… So, You see that initially, SEO is about getting your crap to show up in search engine results…

Let’s face it, a lot of us don’t have much that’s worth reading, really, do we? I photographed Metallica, it was awesome… Yes, so have sixty million other people! But I want people to find MY photos and MY story about it.

So, let’s start with Images… Let’s take the image above for example – It’s a nothing image, a self portrait of me. So, I could leave it called whatever it was called – Let’s say DSC_0012.jpg for example… Instead, there are a few simple guidlines you should follow to attempt to get your photos into search – ALT and TITLE are key. …The HTML for this image is below (Not in full) Can you spot the important bits?

img style=”border: 5px solid black;” title=“Simon-Pollock-Music-Photographer-Self-Portrait” src=”http://gtvone.com/wp-content/uploads/s-600×680.jpg” alt=”Self Portrait of Simon Pollock Music Photographer” width=”600″ height=”680″

There’s our start – If you’re a photographer and you sit there puzzled at why your images never show up in search, start to think about how lame your photos are you name your images and if you even use the ALT tag at all.

You can RSS for part two (Next couple of days) or you can NEWSLETTER for the whole lot in about a week!

But most importantly, it’s late and I’d love a coffee!!

No puppies were harmed in the creation of this blog and the * is actually for TWO people… not a million!

SEO as it applies to a photographer

As I see it, there’s a lot to be said for a well set-up photography website with great SEO structure and lovely, well placed keywords, but that traffic that you get as a result, you’re not going to keep it if you forget to be human sometime.

I was reading an article by the sassy Laura Roeder about remembering to be human on Twitter… and it certainly applies to your webbish type habits, too.. Here’s my take on it!

So, you all know I am a “New Media Producer” during business hours, this means I try to find ways to make people come to certain websites and view content that we produce as a television company. It’s taught me many things about SEO and all of that stuff, but I think the most important thing that I have learned after reading all the eBooks about traffic sourcing and tagging and key wording and community building is that you can’t expect miracles of flooding traffic overnight and if your website doesn’t work how it should, you’re going to have trouble keeping that traffic when you / if you do get it with just search engine optimization and tags alone.

everyone starts with no traffic

Everyone starts with no traffic...

But I’m not really here to talk about my day job, what I wanted to bang on about today was my “other life” Social Media… Which is a horrific “you should be hit with a bat” term that tries to describe what we all do every day, that’s right – talking to other people, saying hello…  some of us just do it with a little more of a serious look on our faces… So, what does it all mean? and why would you bother?

Social Media (ugh) to me is all about communication and sharing information with the people around you, your contacts and their contacts… People use it differently, some of them choose to interact, some tweet and run, some set up auto tweeting / facebook posting gizmos and never reply to anyone, ever… I think this third method is nothing more than worthless spamming in a space that could be much better used.

Me, I’m an “engager” if someone posts on my wall or tweets @me or comments on an image or comments on a blog post, I will, 99% of the time, reply within about an hour (unless I’m asleep!…) You know where this all stems from? I’m the kind of bloke that will stop people that look lost in the street and try help – I’m also not that afraid to stop people, offer help and then admit I have no clue where the place is that they’re after… So, translation into the “e” world… I have no quick fix Social Media strategy, but I know what works in terms of engaging people and I will try offer help where I can – in my field.

SEO-Doesn't-Help-You-Clean-Up-On-Its-Own

You won't clean up with SEO alone...

A lot of people that I speak to suggest that if you have a well optimized website and your SEO ducks are all in a row, that you will clean up in your area of expertise! Well let’s look at that for a second, real world… If you and me stood beside each other at a market stall, you in a nice suit, me in ripped jeans and a wife beater.. and both of us said nothing at all to our customers, you might get more passing trade because you look nicer (to some people) ..and this is a bloody weak analogy (!) but if your website is nicely set up but you don’t engage people and give them the content that’s going to make them come back – the photos that inspire them, the musicality and pod-casts (if that’s your thing) the stupid (yet sometimes amusing) insight into your life – your lovely, expensive SEO website is going to be nothing but a place-holder.

All I am trying to say is …..you can have the nicest photography website in the world, but if you don’t offer something different and perhaps a little bit of community spirit, a cup of coffee every now and then and maybe some lovely cake… then you’re not going to make your website work like it should.

So, in short, forget the SEO bollocks* for a minute, work at being HUMAN (You could have read the heading and then this line and been done with it, really)

*seo isn’t bollocks, not really.
